Ruckus is an independent art writing and critical review journal based in Louisville. When it began operating in 2017 there was nothing else like it in the city. It needed a brand that felt both relatable and scholarly but also referenced the new role it was to play in Louisville’s art community. Thus the moniker “Ruckus” and its playful wordmark were born.
Ruckus primarily publishes content online and needed a website that prioritized images and text above all else. Landing somewhere between a newspaper website and an art portfolio, ruckuslouisville.com is clean, paired down, and completely to the point. Similarly, the brand pulls primarily from its own letterforms to create abstract geometries and patterns that are captivating but do not distract from what is being covered or presented.
